Topic: Mary's Buckhead Update

Mary Norwood / Chair of Buckhead Council of Neighborhoods

Get An Inside Look at What's Happening In Buckhead.  A native of Augusta, Georgia, Mary Norwood is a former 3-term Atlanta City Council Member, a two-time candidate for Mayor of Atlanta, a former small business owner, and a community advocate.

Norwood began her career as the chief operating officer for a radio company, successfully operating and marketing stations throughout the southeast United States.  She was president of a national business organization and the principal broker of a Georgia-based real estate firm.  Later, Norwood founded a computer telephony company, introducing new technology to the market.

In 2001, Norwood won her first election as a citywide Atlanta City Council member.  She won re-election overwhelmingly in 2005, earning a reputation as a leader who brought governments and people together to solve problems.

Norwood ran for Mayor of Atlanta in 2009 and was defeated by only 714 votes, garnering 49.58% of the vote.  After receiving encouragement from voters all across the City, Norwood ran for the Atlanta City Council once again, handily winning her former citywide seat.

In 2017, Norwood ran once again for Mayor of Atlanta.  She came up short by almost the exact margin as in 2009, with 49.55% of the vote.

Mary Norwood has continued to heed the call of public service as a community advocate, serving on dozens of community-focused tasks forces and projects.  She has served on Boards of Directors for 10 associations.  Most recently, Norwood was appointed as the Chair of the Buckhead Council of Neighborhoods, an advocacy organization representing over 40 neighborhoods in and adjacent to Buckhead.

Norwood has a deep understanding of government at all levels.  She has developed expertise in transportation, infrastructure, environmental, and zoning matters.

Mary attended Sweet Briar College and is a graduate of Emory University.  She is married to Doctor Felton Norwood, a retired Atlanta pediatrician, and lives in Tuxedo Park, a Buckhead neighborhood in Atlanta, Georgia.
